1. Curiosity

The discipline of digital marketing is constantly changing as a result of situations such as advancements in technology and updates in algorithms. Digital marketers need to be passionate about making research, asking questions and take steps to learn more about new marketing techniques.

A digital marketer that lacks this skill will soon become a meek sound in the chorus. This is to mean that the knowledge he possesses will be extremely outdated, irrespective of his specialty in the industry. To keep up with updates on marketing, you can utilize RRS reader applications such as feedly

With so many aspects of digital marketing and so many little niche areas, the ability to crave more knowledge about how it all fits together will truly make you better at whatever aspect you choose to specialize in.

2. Communication

soft skills you must have as a digital marketers

The digital marketing profession thrives on the ability to share ideas with the team, employer or clients. Also, in order to convey engaging content in your campaigns as a digital marketer, you need to be a strong communicator or work on yourself to improve the skill.

To digital marketers, communication goes beyond being able to speak decent English, there is the need to disseminate the correct message passed from the client and to also convey your great idea to your team members before the execution process begins.

3. Tenacity

According to Wikipedia, tenacity is having persistence in purpose. It is important to understand that the field of digital marketing is not for someone who gives up easily.  This is because there is always something new, and things you know may in no time become outdated.

One of the things you’ll encounter is pitching an idea that seems great to you and it gets rejected. You may even work so hard on a campaign and get minimal performance. The ability to remain persistent, learn from failures and improve on performance will go a long way to provide a great career in digital marketing.

4. Adaptability

To have a great digital marketing career, you have to be flexible. This is not just as a result of the vastness of the profession but also because you might have to work with different clients whose businesses cut across all sectors.

There is always a chance of you having to do something you have little or no knowledge of doing it. Having the personality skill of adaptability will help you to cope seamlessly in that aspect.

5. Multitasking

A fact that professional digital marketers can relate with is the dreadful amount of tasks they often have to deal with almost at the same time. It is very important to know how to manage time and prioritize tasks as a digital marketer.

This is because there will always be a new article to read, a new development you need to communicate to the client, a report you have to make and of course, an ongoing campaign you have to monitor.

Without the ability to multitask well, you will be inefficient as a digital marketer and what should have not been a great deal would eventually stress you out. The idea is to work smart, not work hard. Devote time to figure out how to do things differently, using more simpler methods. The ability to do this will provide you enough time and ultimately, ensuring an ideal work-life balance.

6. Empathy

A very important skill that will help you maintain a healthy relationship with your employer, team members, clients and most importantly, your clients’ audience is EMPATHY. Most of the time, you will find it difficult to communicate effectively with people in the categories mentioned if you fail to view issues from their own perspectives.

Trying to understand their concerns and pains rather than just being concerned about passing across your information. When it comes to the target audience, for a digital marketer to be able to run successful campaigns, he needs to always tell stories that make the customers the hero. The ability to assume the angle of the second party and be able to decode what drives them will go a long way to guarantee a great career in digital marketing.

7. Strong work ethic

In the field of digital marketing, the bitter truth is that without maintaining a positive attitude toward work, you will not do really well. At times, there will be one thing or another that can down your morale as a digital marketer, you will encounter lots of roadblocks in some form or another. However, when you choose to try again rather give up, there are as well lots of benefits you are open to if you choose digital marketing as a career.

Once you’ve gotten enough traffic to your blog, you can then monetize it by linking Google Adsense to it. The more traffic your blog gets, the money you make when people click on ads hosted on it.

But remember, Linda Ikeji didn’t get to where she is today overnight.

It takes time, effort and dedication and willingness to write quality contents. Contents can also be in form of videos, infographics, webinars, podcasts etc.

If you have ever linked a buyer to seller and gotten a commission on whatever was sold, congratulations, you are an Affiliate Marketer.

Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.

Even before digital marketing, affiliate marketing has been in existence. But to make more money with it online means looking for businesses that offer commission through a referral link. You get paid for anyone that gets directed to their website through your blog.

This is assuming that you already have a blog up and running and there is enough traffic. Many e-commerce companies like Jumia support affiliate marketing.

4. Freelancing/Starting your own Digital Marketing Agency

If you don’t want to go through the means of any of the above-listed ways to make money with digital marketing, then you can either freelance or start your own digital marketing agency,

As a newbie, you can start by freelancing and as your business grows, you turn it into an agency. Many big companies outsource their marketing to digital marketing agencies. Your agency can be one of them.

  • Network as much as possible to get clients.

Once you start getting more jobs than you can handle, look for people who are willing to learn or who already have experience.

Then employ, pay or share revenue and scale. You get the idea right.

5. Growing Your Business with Digital Marketing

Remember we mentioned at the beginning of this article that many companies especially SMEs are going digital. If you fall into this category, then you can make more money by learning digital marketing.

Rather than outsource the marketing of your business to anyone, you now have the required skills to make more sales. You can track, measure and know what is working and what isn’t.

5 Effective Ways to Market Your Web Design or Digital Marketing Business

So you now have web design or digital marketing skills, and you are ready for business. Great!

Next is to make money. However, to make money, people must first know your business exists. That’s where marketing comes in.

In this article, we’ll share 5 effective ways to market your web design or digital marketing business for increased sales.

First Things First – The Basics

Before proceeding with the steps here, you must already have the following:

  1. The skills: Don’t start marketing if you aren’t sure you can deliver. Build your skills, and practice till you’re comfortable with your skills. You can enrol in our academy to learn web design or digital marketing.
  2. Your portfolio website: This must contain:
  • Information about how you can help clients.
  • Information or case studies about clients you’ve worked with.
  • Contact information.
  • A form that potential customers can fill.
  1. Your social media accounts: At least, you should have social media accounts on:
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram

Now that we’ve covered the basic things you need,  here are 5 effective ways to manage your Web Design/Digital Marketing business.

1.Word-of-Mouth Marketing

This is the most effective method to market your business. How do you do this? Simple! Tell everyone you know about the services you offer.

Tell your friends, family members, people at work (if your business is a side hustle), people at your church or mosque, people you meet at events, your friends on social media, your phone/WhatsApp contacts, … you get the point, right?

What you need to understand is this: Even if these people are not in need of your service at the moment, don’t be bothered. It’s just a matter of time before they will know someone who is. And guess who they’ll recommend? That’s right… You!

Why is this effective?

The reason is that people tend to trust recommendations from people they know already. So, if your friend recommends you to a friend, it’s easier to get that deal. There’s also usually less competition when using this strategy.

So get right to it. Start telling people about your web design or digital marketing service!

2. Referral Marketing

Closely related to the first, this method involves getting people that trust your service to refer those that will be interested.

How can you implement this? Not to worry, I’ll even explain two ways:

Referral Method 1 – Your Clients:

If you work with a client (and of course, deliver a good service), you can simply ask the client to refer you to their friends who may be in need of your service.

Most of the time, you don’t need to promise them anything in return. If they are satisfied with your service, they will be pleased to recommend you to others.

However, to make the offer even more irresistible, you can add a sort of reward. This could be a small free service, such as free domain renewal or free SEO audit, or free technical support for a month… whatever you can do easily.

Referral Method 2 – Your Fans:

This method is to get your fans (or anybody for that matter) to refer people to you. To achieve this easily, there should be a monetary reward (a commission) for every client referred to you that pays for your service.

You could define a percentage, say 5%, that they will get if they refer a client to you. Many people are motivated by financial rewards, so.

Would you be running at a loss if you do this? Not necessarily. You may simply factor in the commission into your pricing. Everybody wins!

3. Influencer Marketing

When people hear the term ‘Influencer Marketing’, they usually think it’s complicated. It’s actually not. It simply involves getting someone that is already trusted by your target customers to recommend your service to them.

It’s sort of like a combination of word-of-mouth and referral marketing, except that you are not the one talking to people directly. It’s someone they trust and respect that is talking about your service to them.

This works best if you are targeting a particular niche. For instance, assuming you services to fashion designers, and there’s a particular person (influencer) that many fashion designers respect and follow on Instagram, you could reach out to this influencer, build a relationship with him/her, introduce your service to the person, and ask for the referral.

Here’s one thing you need to know: Some people make money from being influencers, so they may not speak about your service to their audience without a price. Sometimes, the prices aren’t monetary. You could offer a service they’d appreciate in turn for a recommendation.

Another thing to know is that some people are generally cautious of recommending services they can’t vouch for, since their reputation may be at stake. What you need to do in this case is to prove that the influencer will not regret the decision.

If you have testimonials from past client, they will be very useful at the point.

Influencer marketing is very effective in getting people to know what you do, especially if you choose the influencer correctly, based on your target customers.

4. Search Engine Marketing

Search Engine Marketing means using search engines such as Google to get traffic to your website by having your website show up on the search page when potential clients are searching for a service you offer.

There are two ways of implementing Search Engine Marketing:

Method 1: Organic (SEO):

This involves working on your website’s content to get them optimized for the keywords customers are searching for. SEO isn’t particularly easy and requires a great deal of patience, but if done right, the results will be worth the effort.

For maximum results, your website must be on the first page of Google when people search for your services.

Method 2: Paid (Google Ads):

Unlike Organic SEO, Google Ads helps you get instant results. You can run search page ads and start seeing your website on the first page of Google almost immediately.

Are Google Ads expensive? Well, it depends… I’ll explain:

Google Ads use a billing method called pay-per-click. What this means is that you only pay per click! If no one clicks on your ad, you don’t pay a dime. That’s one of the things that makes this very cost effective.

The other end to this is that if a lot of people click, you would pay more. This is supposed to a good thing. It means many people are interested in the service.

Where the challenge is, is when they visit your website and do not convert. By ‘convert’, we mean they do not become paying customers. So you have to ensure the right people are clicking, that your website makes it easy to get in touch with you and that when they do, you are able to close the sale.

Another plus with Google Ads is that you can specify your budget. You can choose how long you want your ads to run, and how much you want to spend throughout the entire time.

Do note that you would be required to pay in US Dollars, so the conversion rate can also affect how much you send.

Google Ads is quite easy to learn, but to get it right, we suggest you either take a digital marketing training or learn online from Google directly.

5. Social Media Marketing

Last but not the least, one more way to market your web design or digital marketing business is through social media. You can use social media in different ways, and I’ll explain below:

Social Media Management:

This involves posting content regularly to your audience (called followers or fans). You can educate people about your services, share about the clients you’ve worked with, and generally keep them engaged with the content they would like.

If done right, over time, more people will know about your business and get in touch with you once they are ready. The goal is to create relevant content that connects with your audience.

This is a long-term approach but doesn’t cost you any money. Also, on platforms like Twitter, some people ask from time to time that they need web design or digital marketing services. To respond, you need to be present there.

Social Media Ads:

You can run paid ads on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to get more people to know about your services. With this, you can start getting requests from people.

Running ads on these platforms is cheap and easy, but so you don’t waste any money, make sure you learn how best to target your audience.

Conclusion

We have shared 5 effective ways you can market your web design or digital marketing business.

As a recap, here they are:

  • Word-of-mouth Marketing
  • Referral Marketing
  • Influencer Marketing
  • Search Engine Marketing
  • Social Media Marketing

We hope you found it helpful and you can use it to start your own business as soon as possible.

When you search for something on google, the results you see on the first page are not there by magic, chance or luck. It’s all down to rigorous on-page & off-page optimization done by SEO experts.

According to Moz,

SEO is a marketing discipline focused on growing visibility in organic (non-paid) search engine results. SEO encompasses both the technical and creative elements required to improve rankings, drive traffic, and increase awareness in search engines.

By becoming an SEO expert, your goal is to understand what it takes to optimize websites to rank them on the first page of search engines especially Google for relevant keywords.

It involves a lot of keyword research, link building, writing quality contents and patience to achieve the desired results.

3. Search Engine Marketing

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a field most people are not too familiar with. It involves increasing the visibility of websites on search engines through paid advertising. It uses Pay-Per-Click (PPC) which is a quick way to get your website visible.

To be a Search Engine Marketer, you can start by running a free course on Google AdWords and get certified.

4. Email Marketing

Every day, we hear email marketing is dead. Don’t be deceived! It is still one of the most effective ways to convert leads into paying customers. Think of it, how many emails do you receive daily? 10, 20, 50?

Currently, about 235.6 Billion emails are being sent and received monthly. What does this mean? Email Marketing is still in business!

Email marketing allows you to get personal with people, build trust and loyalty.

Email marketing isn’t something every digital marketer can do. But it is a great way to bridge the gap between businesses and customers and ensure they remain connected.

To be an email marketer, you have to master the art of writing catchy subject lines to get people to open your emails. Also, the quality of your emails has to be top notch. If you can add storytelling, even better.

5. Content Marketing

Digital marketing field - content marketing

Content is King! You must have heard this a few times. Content is the present and also the future of marketing.

According to Content Marketing Institute,

Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.

Irrespective of the digital marketing field you choose to specialize in, you must write! Whether it is social media captions, creative ad copies or email newsletters.

However, there are people whose only job is to write all kinds of contents. Articles, blog posts, press releases, newsletters, sales copy, website contents, you name it!

Rather than using content to promote your brand, you are providing quality, useful and educational contents to your readers to educate and help them solve their problems.

A content marketer’s goal is to create valuable contents, use it to increase engagement and drive customers to action.

6. Mobile marketing

It’s safe to say that most people spend a large chunk of their time engaged with their mobile phones. According to Statista, an estimated 4.57 Billion million people own a mobile phone.

Enter Digital PR.

It means mixing content marketing, social media and SEO with traditional PR tactics to increase visibility.

Unlike advertising or general internet marketing tactics, digital PR relies on organic and unpaid tactics to promote brand awareness and increase brand reach.

As a digital PR strategist, it is your job to bypass the media and convert news into conversions through various digital platforms.
