5 Effective Ways to Market Your Web Design or Digital Marketing Business

So you now have web design or digital marketing skills, and you are ready for business. Great!

Next is to make money. However, to make money, people must first know your business exists. That’s where marketing comes in.

In this article, we’ll share 5 effective ways to market your web design or digital marketing business for increased sales.


First Things First – The Basics

Before proceeding with the steps here, you must already have the following:

  1. The skills: Don’t start marketing if you aren’t sure you can deliver. Build your skills, and practice till you’re comfortable with your skills. You can enrol in our academy to learn web design or digital marketing.
  2. Your portfolio website: This must contain:
  • Information about how you can help clients.
  • Information or case studies about clients you’ve worked with.
  • Contact information.
  • A form that potential customers can fill.
  1. Your social media accounts: At least, you should have social media accounts on:

  • Twitter
  • Instagram

Now that we’ve covered the basic things you need,  here are 5 effective ways to manage your Web Design/Digital Marketing business.

1.Word-of-Mouth Marketing

This is the most effective method to market your business. How do you do this? Simple! Tell everyone you know about the services you offer.

Tell your friends, family members, people at work (if your business is a side hustle), people at your church or mosque, people you meet at events, your friends on social media, your phone/WhatsApp contacts, … you get the point, right?

What you need to understand is this: Even if these people are not in need of your service at the moment, don’t be bothered. It’s just a matter of time before they will know someone who is. And guess who they’ll recommend? That’s right… You!

Closely related to the first, this method involves getting people that trust your service to refer those that will be interested.

How can you implement this? Not to worry, I’ll even explain two ways:

Referral Method 1 – Your Clients:

If you work with a client (and of course, deliver a good service), you can simply ask the client to refer you to their friends who may be in need of your service.

Most of the time, you don’t need to promise them anything in return. If they are satisfied with your service, they will be pleased to recommend you to others.

However, to make the offer even more irresistible, you can add a sort of reward. This could be a small free service, such as free domain renewal or free SEO audit, or free technical support for a month… whatever you can do easily.

Referral Method 2 – Your Fans:

This method is to get your fans (or anybody for that matter) to refer people to you. To achieve this easily, there should be a monetary reward (a commission) for every client referred to you that pays for your service.

You could define a percentage, say 5%, that they will get if they refer a client to you. Many people are motivated by financial rewards, so.

Would you be running at a loss if you do this? Not necessarily. You may simply factor in the commission into your pricing. Everybody wins!

3. Influencer Marketing

When people hear the term ‘Influencer Marketing’, they usually think it’s complicated. It’s actually not. It simply involves getting someone that is already trusted by your target customers to recommend your service to them.

It’s sort of like a combination of word-of-mouth and referral marketing, except that you are not the one talking to people directly. It’s someone they trust and respect that is talking about your service to them.

This works best if you are targeting a particular niche. For instance, assuming you services to fashion designers, and there’s a particular person (influencer) that many fashion designers respect and follow on Instagram, you could reach out to this influencer, build a relationship with him/her, introduce your service to the person, and ask for the referral.

Here’s one thing you need to know: Some people make money from being influencers, so they may not speak about your service to their audience without a price. Sometimes, the prices aren’t monetary. You could offer a service they’d appreciate in turn for a recommendation.

Another thing to know is that some people are generally cautious of recommending services they can’t vouch for, since their reputation may be at stake. What you need to do in this case is to prove that the influencer will not regret the decision.

If you have testimonials from past client, they will be very useful at the point.

Influencer marketing is very effective in getting people to know what you do, especially if you choose the influencer correctly, based on your target customers.

4. Search Engine Marketing

Search Engine Marketing means using search engines such as Google to get traffic to your website by having your website show up on the search page when potential clients are searching for a service you offer.

There are two ways of implementing Search Engine Marketing:

Method 1: Organic (SEO):

This involves working on your website’s content to get them optimized for the keywords customers are searching for. SEO isn’t particularly easy and requires a great deal of patience, but if done right, the results will be worth the effort.

For maximum results, your website must be on the first page of Google when people search for your services.

Method 2: Paid (Google Ads):

Unlike Organic SEO, Google Ads helps you get instant results. You can run search page ads and start seeing your website on the first page of Google almost immediately.

Are Google Ads expensive? Well, it depends… I’ll explain:

Google Ads use a billing method called pay-per-click. What this means is that you only pay per click! If no one clicks on your ad, you don’t pay a dime. That’s one of the things that makes this very cost effective.

The other end to this is that if a lot of people click, you would pay more. This is supposed to a good thing. It means many people are interested in the service.

Where the challenge is, is when they visit your website and do not convert. By ‘convert’, we mean they do not become paying customers. So you have to ensure the right people are clicking, that your website makes it easy to get in touch with you and that when they do, you are able to close the sale.

Another plus with Google Ads is that you can specify your budget. You can choose how long you want your ads to run, and how much you want to spend throughout the entire time.

Do note that you would be required to pay in US Dollars, so the conversion rate can also affect how much you send.

5. Social Media Marketing

Last but not the least, one more way to market your web design or digital marketing business is through social media. You can use social media in different ways, and I’ll explain below:

Social Media Management:

This involves posting content regularly to your audience (called followers or fans). You can educate people about your services, share about the clients you’ve worked with, and generally keep them engaged with the content they would like.

If done right, over time, more people will know about your business and get in touch with you once they are ready. The goal is to create relevant content that connects with your audience.

This is a long-term approach but doesn’t cost you any money. Also, on platforms like Twitter, some people ask from time to time that they need web design or digital marketing services. To respond, you need to be present there.

Social Media Ads:

You can run paid ads on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to get more people to know about your services. With this, you can start getting requests from people.

Running ads on these platforms is cheap and easy, but so you don’t waste any money, make sure you learn how best to target your audience.
